The Society
of South Africa, country with the fastest pace of development of all the
african countries is really difersified and multicultural. It is formed by many
people races – the majority is black people race (about 76 % of the whole
socjety). Next, owning to the number of people, there are white people with
european roots with 12 % or 13 %. Then there are another important residents of
South Africa – people of colour with about 9 % and people with asian roots (a
little bit more than 2 % ). The positive majority of the people of colour lives in the south part of
the country and people with asian roots usually live in the Kwa Zulu or Natal
province. In most cases they were transported to South Africa by british
people, in order to work on sugar cane plantations .
The
multucurtualism that exists in South Africa is the reason, for that this is the
country where there is for example the biggest percentage of Indian people outside
of India.
In that
place, besides that all the races live together, there are also many ethnic
groups – Nguni, Suazi, Ndebele, Pondo, Xhosa Sotho i Tswana are some of them.
That is why
the people of South Africa use so many different languages. Personally I am
very interested in languages and it is really improbable and unusual that in
one country, the society can use so many different languages, and still be able
to communicate between them. How it results from informations that I have found
until now, most inhabitants, besides their native language, also can use
another one. They have as many as 11 official languages , so I think it is
possible that there are also people who use some non-official languages as
well.
All of them
are: Afrikaans, English (only about 8 % of people and in most cases in big
cities) , Ndebele, Northern Sotho, Sotho, Swazi, Tsonga, Tswana, Venda, Xhosa
and Zulu. The last two languages are also the most popular ones.
When it
comes to the religion, there apart that there are many languages, there are
only many religions in connection with the multiculturalism. The majority of
south african society professes Catholicism (but most of them are Protestants).
There are also many
Confessors of
local african religions . Another religion groups are Hindu, Islamic, Buddism and
Judaism groups.
People
usually don’t know a lot about South Africa but I am sure that everyone knows
these world famous people (and some of you even didn’t know that they were from
South Africa):
1) Nelson
Mandela – What I wrote above probably doesn’t refer to this person, because he
is a really important personality. Mandela was the well-known south african
politician, who had become the symbol of struggle of freedom. He was the part
of anty-aparthaid movement, South African president and also he got the Nobel
Prize.
2) Greg Du
Toit - If someone is interested in photography like me, it can be iterested for
them that Greg Du Toit comes from South Africa. I personally love photos that
show the beauty of nature and I remember this photographer’s photos very well
but I had no idea where he was from, so now I will be able to aprecciate south
african nature more looking at his photos.
3) Charlize
Theron – The south african actress who, I think, most of you can remember from
the movie named ‘’The Devil's Advocate”
or recent
and very popular film ‘’Snow White and the Huntsman” that tells the story
inspired by the „Mirror Mirror” movie.
So I think
South Africa has much more interesting things that we don’t know about and it
is really worth it to read something more about this country and to become
intrested it it!
